TikTok's AI watched a celebrity. Filed her as 'blueberry.'

The app that made short-form video famous tried giving those videos short-form AI summaries. It did not go well.

TikTok's AI overview feature described Charli D'Amelio as "a collection of various blueberries with different toppings." It labeled two separate videos — neither involving violence — as "a person repeatedly striking their head with a hammer." These weren't edge cases. These were the summaries the product shipped.

TikTok has since scaled back the feature while it figures out how to teach an algorithm the difference between a person and a piece of fruit. The algorithm, for its part, has no comment.
